Self-service beyond vending: what hardware-agnostic looked like in 2002
Hardware-agnostic isn't only about terminal brands — it's running one payment and control layer on any machine, vending or not. We shipped that in 2002.
Most conversations about hardware independence stop at the payment terminal: can the same software run on a Nexgo, a PAX, a SUNMI? That's the right question, and we answer it elsewhere — why hardware independence matters for vending operators is the whole argument. But it's the narrow version. The wider one is this: can your platform run a machine that was never a vending machine at all?
We had to answer that in 2002. And we did.
Three kinds of independence, not one
“Hardware-agnostic” gets used loosely. In the field it has to hold up in three separate directions, and most vendors only cover the first:
- Independence from the machine's brand. Five manufacturers in one estate, managed from one screen — not five systems.
- Independence from the machine's age. A ten-year-old electromechanical unit connected to modern payment and telemetry without being thrown away first.
- Independence from the machine's type. The same control and payment logic running on a coffee machine, a laundry, a car wash, an EV charger — or a device that isn't vending anything at all.
Real independence needs all three. The enabling idea is the same in every case: the platform speaks the machine's own language — MDB and Executive on standard vending controllers, PLC over Modbus and relay I/O on everything else — so payment and telemetry are engineered into the machine rather than bolted onto one brand of box.
2002: “remotely control your existing machines”
That's easy to say now. We wrote it on our own website in 2002 — and you can still read it on the Internet Archive (the Wayback Machine). The promise on that page was exactly today's platform pitch: take the machines you already own and control them remotely. “Connected machine,” “IoT,” “cloud” — none of those words existed yet; the thing they describe did.
And from day one we refused to stop at the drinks machine. The same page said the same control architecture could drive electromechanical devices well past vending: turnstiles, taximeters, parking meters, doors, fuel pumps. One control board, one wireless link, state gathered centrally and commands sent back — the logic didn't care what the machine on the end of it happened to be.
And it wasn't just words
The claims are the cheap part, so here's the part that isn't: in 2002 that promise had proof in the field.
- Turnstiles with Turkcell at the Bilişim 2000 fair. We built GSM/SMS turnstiles and admitted more than 80,000 visitors through them. Not a vending machine — the same control and communication engineering.
- GPS fleet tracking. Vehicles reporting position to a centre: the telemetry problem in a different class of device.
- Biometric access control. The root the company's name comes from — DMS = Data Management Systems, fingerprint security. Running a door is the same logic as running a machine.
All of this ran alongside the vending work, where we already had Turkey's first card-paying machines in the field for Pepsi-Cola — documented, and on the record on our engineering page. So for us “hardware-agnostic” was never a label discovered by marketing later. It was where the work started.
Why it still matters
The technology moved; the problem didn't. What we did in 2002 with a control board and wireless packet data, we now do with an Android edge device, Modbus, and the cloud. The architectural idea hasn't changed:

That continuity is hard for a new entrant to fake. Selling a terminal is easy; accumulating two decades of field engineering that reliably runs any brand, any age, any type of machine on one platform is not.
What this means for your estate
In practice, machine-type independence is the “yes” to questions like:
- I have a mixed estate of vending brands — one dashboard for all of them? Yes.
- Can I connect old electromechanical machines without replacing them? Yes — with Smart VMC.
- I have a self-service device that isn't a vending machine at all; it's PLC-controlled. Can I add card and QR payment to it? Yes — with PLC payment integration over Modbus.
Self-service beyond vending, independent of the hardware underneath — the work we started a quarter-century ago is the platform itself now. Bring us a hard machine, a mixed estate, or an integration nobody else will touch. That's the conversation we like having.
